Abstract

The Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere is one of Rome's most precious relics of Medieval times. The church allegedly stands over the Taberna meritoria where, in 38 B.C. a miraculous eruption of oil took place, interpreted later as an annunciation of the birth of Jesus. The first sanctuary was built in 221 and 227 by Pope Callixtus I and later completed by Pope Julius I (died in 352). The basic floor plan and wall structure of the church date back to the IV century, and much of the structure to 1140-43. The church has large areas of important mosaics from the late 13th century by Pietro Cavallini.
