Abstract
From the founding of Rome until nowadays, the Campidoglio has symbolized the epicentre of Rome's might. Many of the city's most important buildings stood on this square and hill. It is truly a palimpsest from which it is possible to see e.g. the Imperial Forums, a copy of the bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, the graceful piazza designed by Michelangelo in 1538, and the main venue of Rome's current municipal government.
