Abstract
Extraordinary example of hidden stratification: built over the Stadium of Domitian (I century A.C.) - hence the long, oval shape of the square-, it was paved over in the XV century and for almost 300 years hosted the city's main market. In the centre of the square, Bernini's masterwork: the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi.
